COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- A penalty kick by Malcolm Johnston with 64 seconds left in the first half proved to be the final margin as eighth-ranked Maryland edged Old Dominion 1-0 in men's soccer action on Friday night.
The Monarchs opened the contest with a pair of shots on goal in the first 90 seconds and had four in the first half, but none could get past goalkeeper Jaime Lowell of Maryland (6-1-2).
At the 43:56 mark of the first half, Johnston was awarded a penalty kick and he put one in the bottom left corner to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
Maryland outshot Old Dominion (4-3-2) 12-8 in the game, but the Monarchs had seven of their eight shots on goal compared to six for Maryland. The hosts had a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities. The loss snapped a five-match undefeated streak for the Monarchs.
Old Dominion returns to the home pitch for a 7 p.m. match on October 8 against West Virginia in Sun Belt Conference action.
