NORFOLK, Va. -- American University's Robert Matei headed in a corner kick 43 seconds into the second half and the visiting Eagles made that stand up in a 1-0 win over Old Dominion in a non-conference men's soccer match Sunday night.
After a first half that saw teams put together some flurries of action, the Eagles came out in the second half and forced a corner kick on their first possession. Matei caught a rebound and headed it into the net for the 1-0 American (1-0-1) advantage.
Old Dominion held a 12-10 advantage in shots, while Michael Statham had seven saves in the contest and made several in the second half as the Eagles forced the action.
"We fell asleep to start the second half and didn't do a good job eliminating the corner kick," said ODU Head Coach Alan Dawson. "One goal was going to make it or break it tonight and unfortunately it was their goal."
Old Dominion (1-1) now visits Loyola (MD) on Friday night for a 6 p.m. kick, before returning home to host Campbell on September 9 at 7 p.m.
