WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Delphine Le Jeune scored both Old Dominion goals in the 2022 season opener, but a tally with 3:37 left in double overtime gave William & Mary a 3-2 win on Friday evening.
"It was a tough loss, a long hard game, and I don't feel we really played our best game. We didn't play simple enough passing," said ODU Head Coach Andrew Griffiths. "We probably had 20 quality chances in the attacking end to score, and we didn't score enough to put the game out of reach. And in the end, a few mental mistakes in decision-making caused the goals.
"When we did play simple we looked great, so I'm encouraged with that, and a few of our newcomers. But looking do some better on Sunday against BC."
The Tribe got on the board first at the 3:52 mark of the first period as Lauren Curran put one in the back of the cage for an early 1-0 W&M lead. That goal stayed throughout the first half as Old Dominion did force more action in the second period outshooting the Tribe 4-2 and forcing two penalty corners.
Old Dominion got on the board 81 seconds into the final period as Le Jeune rebounded her missed shot and put one in the far corner as ODU tied the match 1-1. A little over five minutes later, Le Jeunescored off a penalty corner off feeds from Frederique Zandbergenand Courtney Lynch.
With 49 seconds remaining in regulation, the Tribe's Sally Snead cleaned up a rebounded shot and evened the match at 2-2.
Both teams were scoreless in the first overtime, but in the second Goodwin intercepted a Monarch pass and knocked in the game winner. ODU held an 18-14 advantage in shots and 7-5 in penalty corners in the match.
ODU now visits Boston College on Sunday at 3 p.m.
