WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's soccer team held an 18-6 advantage in shots, including 10-2 in the second half, but William & Mary used a first half goal to take a 1-0 win on Thursday night.

"We are of course disappointed not to have won this game. The chances we created and amount of ball we had we felt we should have done enough to come away with more," said ODU Head Coach Angie Hind. "But credit to William and Mary, they made it so hard for us by being aggressive and competing hard especially in the first half and they took their chance. As we pushed for the goal, they dropped deeper and made it hard for us to find space in front of goal."

The Monarchs came out aggressively and put several shots on goalie Zoe Doughty in the first few minutes, keeping the pressure on throughout the majority of the game. In the 30th minute, Elaina Longjohn got behind the defense and scored what proved to be the only goal of the night for the Tribe.

In the second half, ODU's intensity went up another notch holding a 10-2 advantage in shots as the Monarchs came out from all angles but couldn't find the magic spot to tie up the contest. The Monarchs held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks in the match.

"I'm proud of our attitude, work rate and desire and I think we moved the ball very well at times," Hind said. "It's early in the season and we know we have pieces we have to put together to get over the line, and we will. "

Old Dominion concludes this three-match road swing to start the season on Sunday afternoon with a 5 p.m. start in Greenville, North Carolina against the East Carolina Pirates. The Monarchs will play their first match at home on Thursday, Sept. 2 taking on Virginia Tech at 6 p.m.
