NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion women's basketball head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones announced the Monarchs 2022-23 schedule on Thursday. A total of 30 regular-season games, with 15 inside Chartway Arena and 18 games in the Sun Belt conference dotting the upcoming slate.
The regular season opens with a pair of games on the road as Old Dominion will visit a pair of first-time opponents in Florida Gulf Coast (Nov. 7) and Texas Southern (Nov. 10). Florida Gulf Coast advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year and won 30 games.
"This year's non-conference schedule is packed with excitement. We open our season against FGCU, a team known for its historical excellence. They will be a great test for our program which will introduce eight newcomers to our Monarch family," Milton-Jones said.
Following that opening road trip will be three straight at home to close out November with William & Mary (Nov. 15), Coppin State (Nov. 27) and a rematch with Temple on November 30. Last year, the Monarchs went to Philadelphia and knocked off the Owls 71-68.
In December, the Monarchs start at USC Upstate (Dec. 3) before another three-game homestand heads the team into exam break. That run begins on December 6 as Lincoln (PA) comes to Chartway Arena, followed by a pair of in-state opponents with VCU (Dec. 8) and Norfolk State (Dec. 11) rounding out the pre-exam schedule. The Monarchs and the Rams have split the last ten meetings with each winning on their home court.
"Our non-conference schedule is loaded with team mostly on the east coast and includes a stretch of five of six home games. This will allow our faithful fans to get a good glimpse of our new additions to our Monarch family heading into Sun Belt Conference play. Our off season has been filled with an emphasis on building our sisterhood on and off the court. Playing a tough nonconference schedule will challenge us to put that on display every night we suit up," said Milton-Jones.
Old Dominion will participate in the 2022 Sun Coast Challenge in Tampa, Florida from Dec. 19-21. The schedule for this event is being finalized. One last non-conference road game will be announced at a later date.
During the conference regular season, teams will compete every Thursday and Saturday from Dec. 29 and Dec. 31 through the last weekend of February. The season will conclude with the 2023 Sun Belt Women's Basketball Championship at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola, Fla., from Tuesday, Feb. 28, to Monday, March 6.
ODU will play the members of the East Division twice, while playing six of the seven West Division members once. The Monarchs will face Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina, Marshall, Georgia State, Appalachian State and James Madison twice. From the west, the Monarchs will host ULM, South Alabama and Texas State, while visiting Louisiana, Southern Mississippi and Arkansas State.
The Monarchs will open their home conference schedule on January 5 facing Louisiana-Monroe and then host South Alabama two days later. In-state rival James Madison rounds out the home schedule on February 18.
