NORFOLK, Va. - Head Coach Fred Chao and the Old Dominion Women's Volleyball team announced their 2022 schedule on Friday with a challenging slate that will see the Monarchs take on several new faces, travel to three tournaments and face teams from the Big 10, ACC and Atlantic 10.
The Sun Belt Conference will play two matches in a weekend as the Monarchs will host Marshall, Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State and will travel to Georgia Southern, James Madison and Georgia State. The Monarchs will also have two crossover matches with the Sun Belt West Division as they'll host Southern Miss and visit Louisiana.
"Our fall 2022 schedule represents a big step forward in our program's growth. We will play a very challenging non-conference schedule as well as a new conference schedule," he said. "Out of our 21 opponents, only four will be familiar. However, this program is built on unique challenges, and we look forward to the competition. "
The Monarchs open with a home exhibition against UNC Wilmington on August 20 at 3 p.m. before heading to Flagstaff, Arizona for a tournament at Northern Arizona August 26-27. In Arizona, the Monarchs will open the regular season with Michigan, Utah Tech and the host Northern Arizona.
September begins in Blacksburg participating in a tournament hosted by Virginia Tech. Over September 2-3, the Monarchs will face Marist and Coppin State on the first day and end the event with a 3 p.m. matchup against the Hokies on September 3.
Old Dominion will be home for the second weekend of the month hosting the Quest For the Crown as the annual event will run September 8-10. Night one will see the Monarchs tangle with Navy at 6:30 p.m. On September 9, three matches will take place starting with Notre Dame taking on East Carolina at noon and then East Carolina facing Navy at 4 p.m. The nightcap will see Notre Dame take on the Monarchs at 6:30 p.m. The event will end with a pair of matches on September 10 as Notre Dame faces Navy at noon and the Monarchs facing East Carolina at 3 p.m.
A mid-week match at Norfolk State on September 13 will lead the Monarchs into their final regular-season tournament when the venture to VCU for a tournament on September 16-17. On September 16, they'll face North Carolina at 10 a.m. and UMBC at 3 p.m., before closing the event with a 6 p.m. tilt against the host Rams on September 17.
The first matches in the Sun Belt for the Monarchs will take place at home on September 22-23 when they host Marshall at 6:30 p.m. They'll visit Georgia Southern and James Madison over the next two weekends before returning home to tangle with Coastal Carolina at 6:30 p.m. on October 14 and 1 p.m. on October 15.
Following a trip to Louisiana, the Monarchs will host App State on October 28 (6:30 p.m.) and October 29 (1 p.m.) before heading to Georgia State to start November.
The final home series will be on November 10-11 when they will entertain Southern Miss at 6:30 p.m. each night. The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will take place November 16-20 in Foley, Alabama.
