NORFOLK, Va. - On the 50th anniversary of Title IX, Pepsi Stronger Together and former professional basketball player and Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman announce a $25,000 donation to go towards scholarships for female athletes at Lieberman's alma mater Old Dominion University, in honor of her impact and as one Title IX's earliest successes in 1976. This donation will continue to put opportunities forward for young women and create access to sports in underserved communities.
In addition to the donation, Pepsi Stronger Together is also supporting the creation of a new basketball "Dream Court," in partnership with Nancy Lieberman Charities, at the East Ocean View Recreation Center, amplifying recent upgrades for one of Norfolk's communities in need. Upon completion, the court will include a state-of-the-art outdoor high school regulation size basketball court, a supply of brand-new basketballs, as well as programming and mentorship on inclusion, social justice, and civic engagement.
"Title IX was life changing in granting me equitable access to sport and the opportunities it provides at the collegiate level. With Dream Courts, our goal is to provide that access to children even earlier, so they get on a pathway to success with a safe space to learn integral life skills to use on and off the court," said Nancy Lieberman. "It's an honor to be partnering with Pepsi Stronger Together to give back to the home of my alma mater and support the next generation of female athletes, and potential Old Dominion legends, in training."
Nancy Lieberman is the newest Pepsi Stronger Together ambassador, supporting and amplifying the work of the grassroots program focused on giving back and making an impact across underserved communities.
"Pepsi Stronger Together and Nancy Lieberman Charities have a shared mission in using our platforms to drive positive change across communities, starting at a local level," said Derek Lewis, President of PepsiCo's Multicultural Business and Equity Development. "This partnership is another way we hope to create access to sport, and the benefits and opportunities it provides, for even more children in the Norfolk community."
Since the inception of the Dream Courts program in 2010, more than 100 Dream Courts have been installed across the United States to make basketball more accessible to children and provide an environment for them to play. Over three million youth play on Dream Courts in the U.S., with each court serving approximately 120 youth per day and helping to improve the lives of over 4.9 million children a year.
