HATTIESBURG, MISS. -- A one-out single by Danny Lynch plated Christopher Sargent with the winning run as seventh-ranked Southern Miss defeated Old Dominion 5-4 in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon. The Monarchs had clinched the series win with victories on Friday and Saturday.
Old Dominion tied the game in the top of the ninth with two outs as Thomas Wheeler smacked his ninth home run on the year to even the game at four.
The Monarchs got on the board first with a run in the top of the first after Wheeler and Matt Coutney walked with a Kenny Levari single in between to load the bases. Following a strikeout, Brock Gagliardi drove in Wheeler with a sacrifice fly for an early 1-0 lead.
Gagliardi pushed the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth as he ripped a two-run home run to center field to score Andy Garriola who was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Southern Miss answered that two-run shot with one of its own as with two outs Sargent walked and scored on a home run by Will McGillis to trim the lead to 3-2.
The Golden Eagles tied it at three in the sixth as Dustin Dickerson doubled to left field and scored on a two-out single by Sargent. They took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh on a bases loaded walk to Dickerson to score pinch-runner Brady Faust.
