NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women's tennis team will open play in the 2022 NCAA Championships at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon taking on Furman at the Ambler Tennis Stadium on the campus of Duke University

Old Dominion (20-6) is currently ranked 29th nationally, while Furman (21-6) is currently 36th. The later match on Friday pits tournament third-seed Duke (19-3) against Quinnipiac (13-8) scheduled for a 4 p.m. start. Those winners will face off on Saturday at 4 p.m. for the right to advance to the Super Regional round on the weekend of May 13-14.

This marks the fourth appearance all-time for the Monarchs. ODU garnered its first-ever NCAA win last year with a 4-2 win over Arkansas in the North Carolina Regional. Three Monarchs are currently in the latest ITA rankings announced on Wednesday with Yuliia Starodubtseva (18th), Tatsiana Sasnouskaya (110th) and Alexandra Viktorovitch (124th). In doubles, the tandem of Starodubtseva and Sasnouskaya are eighth-ranked.

A win for the Monarchs will tie the most wins in school history set by the 2000-01 team that went 21-2.

Furman, secured the Southern Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by winning its 21st SoCon Championship, is making its 14th appearance in the NCAA tournament. They are ranked 36th with Julie Adams their highest ranked singles player at 38th. She teams with Ellie Schoppe to form the 34th-ranked doubles tandem.
