Baseball Finishes Regular Season With Sweep Of WKU In 5-4 Win

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Old Dominion baseball team closed out the regular season on Saturday with a 5-4 win over Western Kentucky to sweep the series. ODU (38-15, 19-11) has now won seven in a row and finished the second half of the conference schedule with an impressive 11-4 mark.
 
WKU (18-36) opened the scoring with an unearned run in the first as Jackson Gray singled to third and an errant throw allowed Tristin Garcia to score.
 
The Monarchs got on the board in the top of the second as with two outs Lincoln Ransom singled and Kenny Levari drew a walk. Chris Dengler followed with his second home run of the season with a blast to left field and a 3-1 ODU advantage.
 
After giving up a run in the second, the Monarchs put up two more in the top of the third as Thomas Wheeler starting with a walk and Josh Trujillo smacked a two-run blast to right field pushing the lead to 5-1.
 
Starting pitcher Sam Armstrong found a groove allowing only two hits over the next four innings to finish the game with six innings and five hits to go with two strikeouts for his third win.
 
WKU put up two more in the ninth as Noah Dean came in for the final three outs to earn his school record 18th career save. He broke the record of Ron Walker who had 17 from 1992-95.
 
Ransom and Dengler had two hits apiece to lead the Monarchs at the plate.
 
The Monarchs now head to Hattiesburg, Mississippi for the Conference USA Tournament starting on Wednesday.
