Coutney and Garriola Named Dick Howser Trophy Semifinalists

DALLAS – Old Dominion senior's Matt Coutney and Andy Garriola were named semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, given to the top player in college baseball, the NCBWA announced on Thursday. ODU is one of 10 programs to have two semifinalists.
 
The National Player of the Month for April, Coutney is hitting .359 with 23 home runs, 15 doubles and 57 RBIs on the year. He leads Conference USA and is fifth in the country with 23 homers and also leads the league and ranks seventh in the country with a .790 slugging percentage.
 
A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Coutney also leads Conference USA and is fifth in the country with 154 total bases. He ranks fourth in C-USA in runs scored (55), sixth in batting average (.359), sixth in RBIs (57) and eighth in hits (70).
 
Coutney leads ODU with 24 multi-hit games on the year, including the only five-hit game of the season by a Monarch when he went 5-for-7 with a pair of homers, three RBIs and four runs scored in a 23-7 win at Middle Tennessee. He clubbed two homers in a games five times so far this season.
 
Garriola leads the Monarchs and is sixth in the country with 69 RBIs this season after leading the nation in the category a year ago. He is second on ODU in batting average (.333), homers (20) slugging percentage (.721) and hits (68). 
 
Earlier this season he broke the ODU career record for home runs and now has 44 career long balls and he's currently third in program history with 203 career RBIs, only five behind second-place holder Anthony Forelli.
 
He is second to Coutney in multi-hit games with 22 and leads the club with 17 multi-RBI games. In a 14-7 win at FIU, Garriola went 3-for-5 with a pair of homers and a double to go along with eight RBIs.
 
The Monarchs conclude the regular season this weekend with a three-game series beginning tonight at 6 p.m. at WKU.
