NORFOLK, Va. – VCU scored four runs in the first five innings on its way to an 8-2 win over Old Dominion baseball Tuesday night at the Bud Metheny Ballpark.
VCU (29-18) got on the board in the second inning with a leadoff homer from A.J. Mathis. Casey Gibbs followed with a walk and after a strikeout, Marcus O'Malley singled to put runners on the corner before Ben Nippolt delivered a sac fly to score Gibbs and make the score 2-0.
The Rams scored a run in the fourth before Old Dominion (31-14) got on the board in the bottom half. Brock Gagliardi led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a groundout by Robbie Petracci. Kenny Levari knocked a sacrifice fly to center to score Gagliardi and cut the deficit to 3-1.
Mathis got a run back for VCU in the fifth with an RBI double and the Rams tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh and eighth. Lincoln Ransom hit a pinch-hit homer in the ninth for the final 8-2 score.
Brock Gagliardi went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for the Monarchs. Connor Hujsak was 4-for-4 to lead the way for the Rams.
Old Dominion hosts William & Mary Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Ballpark.
