DALLAS – For the second time this season, Andy Garriola of the Old Dominion baseball team has been named Conference USA's Hitter of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Garriola hit 9-of-18 with three home runs, 12 runs batted in and four runs scored over four games last week, helping the Monarchs to a C-USA series win at FIU.
The senior from Sierra Madre, California hit safely in all four games, including a pair of three-hit outings. He went 3-for-4 and drove in three in an 8-6 midweek loss to Campbell and added another hit in Friday's opener at FIU.
It was over the weekend that Garriola caught fire. He hit 3-for-5 in Saturday's 14-7 win, smacking two home runs and driving in a career-high eight. Garriola added two more hits on Sunday, including the 37th homer of his career, drove in another run and scored twice as the Monarchs took the series 18-5 in seven innings.
Sunday's long ball moved Garriola into a three-way tie with Tony Gsell and Josh Wright atop the career home run leaderboard at ODU.
Following his weekend spree, Garriola now ranks first in C-USA and second nationally with 13 home runs. The outfielder also leads the conference and is fourth in the nation in both RBIs (44) and slugging (.870).
