DALLAS – Matt Coutney of the Old Dominion baseball team capped off a record-setting week by retaining Conference USA Hitter of the Week honors, the conference announced on Monday.

The red-hot Monarch first baseman hit .500 in his four games last week, notching seven hits in 14 at-bats. Five of those seven hits left the park as Coutney broke the program's single-season home run record in the process. Additionally, Coutney drove in eight runs and scored nine times.

Coutney picked up right where he left off with a 2-for-4 showing and a pair of homers in ODU's 5-1 midweek win at William & Mary, his fifth-straight game with a long ball. The native of Edmonton, Alberta stayed in the yard in ODU's 14-0 win over Florida Atlantic on Friday but went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Coutney did homer in a 7-5 win over the Owls on Saturday, giving the Monarchs a much-needed series victory. Sunday was record-setting for Coutney as he hit his 20th and 21st home runs of the season to tie and then surpass Ron Walker for the program's single-season record.

The senior is now tied for the national lead in home runs and is second in slugging percentage (.869). He is also fifth in Division I with 126 total bases.

Old Dominion welcomes Virginia to Harbor Park tomorrow at 6 p.m. for the annual Commonwealth Clash before hosting LA Tech for three games Friday through Sunday.
