Women's Tennis Sweeps Pair Of Matches On Senior Day

NORFOLK, Va. – The 34th-ranked Old Dominion women's tennis team finished off a perfect home record for the 2022 season with a pair of 4-0 wins on Senior Day over Charlotte and James Madison.

Prior to the start of the day, the Monarchs celebrated a pair of seniors in their final home -  Yuliia Starodubtseva and Marina Alcaide.   With the wins today, the Monarchs will take a 37-match home court winning streak into the 2022-23 season.

"It's a special day when you honor your seniors," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla.  "Honoring these two was a wonderful event.  I am sad to see them go, but man it's great that they were here."

MATCH 1 - ODU 4, Charlotte 0
Senior Day started with a Conference USA matchup against the Charlotte 49ers.  Old Dominion took the doubles point as Alesya Yakubovich and Shahar Biran won 6-3 over Ruxi Schech and Kaavya Sawhney at number two.  Alexandra Viktorovich and Sofia Johnson won at number three over Rocio Safont and Lucie Petruzelova 6-4.

Singles saw the Monarchs take three straight to clinch the match.  Johnson won 6-3, 6-2 over Petruzelova at number four, while Yuliia Starodubtseva scored a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the top spot to take a 3-0 lead.  Biran clinched the C-USA win for the Monarchs with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sawhney at number six. 
 
MATCH 2 - ODU 4, JMU 0
Against the Dukes, Old Dominion scored the doubles point with wins at the one and three spots.  Starodubtseva and Tatsiana Sasnouskaya won at the number one spot 6-3, after the Dukes won at number two 6-2.  Viktorovich and Johnson clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win at number three for the Monarchs.

ODU took three straight set victories at numbers four, five and six to clinch the dual match.  Johnson got the run started at the four spot with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hope Moulin.  Yakubovich followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Amanda Nord to take a 3-0 lead.  The win was clinched by Biran with a 6-0, 6-3 win at number six over Lynelle Lim.
 
"It's a great day for the Monarchs.  We are looking, feeling and playing tough.  I am excited to hit the courts in Murfreesboro," Manilla said.

ODU will return to action at the CUSA Chmpionships hosted by Middle Tennessee starting on Thursday.
