NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion senior Yuliia Starodubtseva was named Conference USA Athlete of the Week on Wednesday by the league office.
Starodubtseva, ranked 28th nationally in singles, recorded a perfect week going 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles on the Monarchs three-match road swing. On the spring season she is 14-1 in singles and 22-5 overall on the year.
On Friday, she defeated top-ranked Daria Fryman of Princeton 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 10-4. It is believed to be the first time a Monarch women's tennis player has knocked off the top-ranked singles player in NCAA Division I. Her other wins on the weekend were 6-0, 6-1 over Navy and 6-1, 6-0 over Columbia.
This marks her second C-USA Athlete of the Week award this spring after winning it for the week ending February 2.
Old Dominion (12-6) is back home this weekend hosting East Carolina on Saturday at 1 p.m.
