Sabrina Leatherwood

Growing up on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., Sabrina Leatherwood paid attention to the hustle and bustle of what was going on around her and was intrigued. She also watched how her mom, Jocelyn Leatherwood, excelled working in a male dominated industry and wanted to be like her. All of this led to Leatherwood being named the Old Dominion University 2021-22 International Business Student of the Year.

A junior goalie on the lacrosse team, Leatherwood was thrilled to bestowed the honor.

"It feels really good to know my hard work paid off and everything I put into school and the opportunities I have are helping me earn an award like this," Leatherwood said. "To make my family proud makes me feel really good."

Leatherwood discusses family a lot, including the reason she chose her major. The international business major's focus is on European business, and that is not an accident.

"My grandparents are from Europe, my Dad's mother is from Germany and my mom's father is from the Netherlands. I hold dual citizenship with Germany and have a European passport so I thought that would be an asset to a company."

Leatherwood has actually never been to Germany but made a trip to the Netherlands following her senior year of high school. The trip made a lasting impression.

"It's beautiful. It's super green and a very relaxed lifestyle in comparison to here."

Getting into the European portion of business isn't the only part of Leatherwood's major that had family influence. The business part played a major familial role, especially her mother. Her Mom is the head of human resources for a healthcare finance company and here Dad is the director of development for a medical company.

"Watching my Mom work in business on teams that were predominantly made up of male executives inspired me to work hard in school because I aspire to be as successful as her," Leatherwood said.

Leatherwood is a junior and has been awarded the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal and was named to last year's American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Her time at ODU is winding down but she knows she has to worry about what is in front of her first.

"I'm going to focus on finishing school strong. I'm working on applying to MBA program see where it goes from there. I'd like to work on the logistics side of business. I have a supply chain minor and find that very interesting."
