Women's Tennis Rallies Back To Knock Off Wisconsin To Close ITA Indoor Nationals

MADISON, Wisc. – Having to face the hosts in the final match on day three of the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Indoor National Championships, the Old Dominion women's tennis team stormed back in singles winning four of the five finished matches for a 4-2 victory over Wisconsin early Monday morning.
 
The win marked the first time ODU scored a victory in the championship event.  In 2002, the Monarchs qualified for the first time and lost three matches in Madison.

"A fantastic team win to get it done today," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla.
 
In a match that started at 10:30 p.m. EST Sunday night and did not end till nearly 1:45 a.m. EST, the host Badgers got doubles wins at number three (6-2) and the point clincher at number one (7-5) for the early 1-0 lead.
 
Singles saw the Monarchs roar back with a win by Alexandra Viktorovich at number four 6-2, 6-2 to tie the match at one.   The Monarchs took a 2-1 lead when Sofia Johnson won at number five singles 6-3, 6-3.  After falling at number three, the top two spots clinched the win for ODU.
 
Tatsiana Sasnouskaya won 6-3, 6-4 at number two to take a 3-2 lead and then Yuliia Starodubtseva got the win at the top with a 7-5, 7-5 decision.  
 
Alesya Yakubovich was one point away from her match finishing at number six as she had rallied to lead 3-6, 6-2, 5-3 and up 40-15 when Starodubtseva clinched her match.
 
ODU (4-4) will now have a home match on Friday at 1 p.m. when they host Virginia Tech inside the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
