Game Notes - ODU | FAU

Norfolk, Va. – For the first time in 36 days, the Old Dominion women's basketball team plays inside Chartway Arena when it hosts Florida Atlantic on Monday at 1:30 p.m. The game is streaming live on ESPN+ with the radio broadcast being carried on Money Talk 1310 AM, 100.9 FM and 97.3 HD2.

The Starting Five
The Monarchs saw their nine-game win streak end on Saturday. The streak was the longest under head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones and was, at the time, the fifth-longest streak in Division I. ODU trailed by as many as 11 in the second half at UTEP but twice tied the score in the fourth only for the Miners to score the last five points of the game. After shooting 7-for-25 (.281) in the first half, the Monarchs shot 50 percent in the second half, including a 6-of-10 mark in the fourth quarter. For the game, Old Dominion made 19 of its 49 attempts (.388) and was 2-of-11 from behind the arc.

ODU and FAU are meeting for the 13th time on Monday. The Monarchs have never lost a game to the Owls, boasting a 12-0 series record.

Amari Young enters Monday's game with 999 career points. She is on the precipice of becoming the 35th member of the 1,000-point club at ODU. Ajah Wayne also scored her 1,000th career point this season, doing so against Saint Joseph's on Nov. 26.

The Monarchs are one of the tightest defensive units in the country this year. ODU entered Sunday ranked seventh nationally and first in C-USA in scoring defense (50.5). The Monarchs are 21st in field goal percentage defense (.349) and 22nd in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.251). ODU is turning teams over 22.64 times per game (13th in DI) while averaging the 11th-most steals per game (12.5) in the country.

On Feb. 19, 2021 the Monarchs sat at 6-9 overall and 3-8 in Conference USA before ending the season with seven wins in their last nine games. The Monarchs are a combined 18-5 (.783) since that Feb. 19 loss to UAB. Those 18 wins are the most by a C-USA team over that span, and no team in C-USA can match ODU's win percentage since Feb. 19.

Scouting FAU
The Owls dropped their fifth straight on Saturday, losing 82-65 at home to UAB. FAU allowed 55-percent shooting from the Blazers and shot below 35 percent.

Janeta Rozentale paced FAU with 21 points, six rebounds and five steals. She combined with Sofia Galeron to go 6-of-12 from 3-point range. The rest of the team made just one trey on 13 attempts.

Rozentale is FAU's second-leading scorer, averaging 12.3 per game and is first on the team in rebounding (8.3). Amber Gaston is the Owls' top scorer at 13.1 per game on 52.5 percent shooting but did not play against the Blazers. Gaston also averages more than one block per contest.

The Series
ODU and FAU are meeting for the 13th time on Monday. The Monarchs have never lost a game to the Owls, boasting a 12-0 series record.

The sides played two times last season with ODU winning 71-56 and 77-72. Ajah Wayne had a pair of double-doubles in those games with 23 points and 14 rebounds in the first game and 19 and 12 in the second.

What's Next
ODU's long homestand continues on Thursday when it hosts Rice for a 6:30 tip. After that, the Monarchs welcome North Texas on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Mask Policy
Old Dominion University updated its mask protocols to enhance the health and safety of the campus community and to reflect updated guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As of August 16, Old Dominion University requires face coverings to be worn when entering all indoor spaces, including Chartway Arena. We encourage you to wear your mask at all times while in the building, with the exception of actively eating or drinking. We will continue to monitor and follow state and CDC guidelines. Fans do not currently have to show proof of vaccination to attend ODU Basketball games at Chartway Arena.
