Four Baseball Monarchs Named to ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team

NORFOLK, Va. – For the first time since 2006, Old Dominion University baseball placed four players on the Atlantic-ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team. Kyle Battle and Andy Garriola garnered first-team accolades, while Carter Trice and Tommy Bell were named to the second team.

In 2006, Dana Arrowood, Jason Godin, Jimmy Miles and Patrick Nichols all were named to the all-region team.

For Battle, it is honors in back-to-back days as he was named NCBWA All-America on Wednesday. The first-team All-C-USA honoree led Conference USA and is tied for 16th in the nation with 18 homers. He's also tied for third in the country with 56 walks and ranks eighth in runs scored with 68. Battle start 59-of-60 games for ODU, totaling 70 hits and ranking eighth in the country with 68 runs scored.

For Garriola, it is the second time in his career he's earned an all-region honor, as he to the first-team as well in 2019. A native of Sierra Madre, California, Garriola is tied for the nation's lead in RBIs with 72. He hit .318 on the year with 14 homers, 16 doubles, 75 hits and scored 53 runs.

Trice adds another notch in his postseason accolades, as the C-USA Freshman of the Year has also been named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA, as well as a second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Trice led ODU with a .355 average and 17 doubles, was tied for second on the club with 14 homers and third in RBIs with 54. He ranks fifth nationally among freshman in total bases with 148 and is tied for sixth in hits with 83.

For the third-straight year, Bell started every game of the season at shortstop for the Monarchs. The only ODU player to start all 60 games, he finished second on the team with a .343 average, while notching eight home runs, nine doubles and 49 RBIs. He drove in the game-winning run in ODU's 2-1 NCAA Regionals win over South Carolina. A junior from Kettering, Ohio, Bell tied the ODU single-season record for hit by pitches with 18.

The Monarchs were 44-16 this season and won ODU's first baseball Conference USA Championship and first conference championship in baseball since 1995.
 
ODU was the overall No. 11 seed in the NCAA Tournament and the No. 1 seed in the Columbia Regional. In the Regional, Trice had a pair of multi-hit games, and was named to the All-Regional Team.
