NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women's basketball team opens its 53rd season of competition against South Carolina State on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. inside Chartway Arena. Tuesday's game is streaming live on CUSA.tv as well as airing on ESPN Radio 94.1.

About ODU
The Monarchs hosted Christopher Newport in an exhibition last week, winning 87-70. Amari Young led all players with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting while coming up with four steals in only 19 minutes of action.

Kaye Clark, Kaylen Nelson and Brianna Jackson each notched 10 points apiece. Clark added six assists and was 6-of-6 from the foul line, Nelson made five of her six shot attempts, and Jackson grabbed five rebounds.

The Monarchs return four starters from a season ago and welcome 10 total newcomers to the squad. ODU went 13-11 overall in head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones' first season at the helm, finishing the campaign by winning seven of its last nine games and reaching the semifinals of the Conference USA Tournament as a No. 6 seed. Despite the turnover, Old Dominion still returns 69 percent of its minutes played from a season ago as well as 68 percent of its scoring, 67 percent of its assists and 79 percent of its total rebounds.

The coaches of C-USA picked Old Dominion to finish second this season in what figures to be a close race with Charlotte. The Monarchs received just 12 fewer points than the 49ers, and both teams earned six first-place votes each.

ODU placed three on the preseason all-conference team in returners Ajah Wayne and Amari Young and incoming transfer Iggy Allen. Wayne earned Second Team All-State honors from VaSID in the spring and also played her way on the Conference USA All-Tournament Team. The senior from Birmingham, Alabama led the league in offensive rebounding (3.8 per game) and was third in field goal percentage (.530) a season ago. Young garnered spots on the All-C-USA Second Team and the C-USA All-Defensive Team last season after averaging 13.6 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. She was 18th nationally in rebounding and top-10 in C-USA in steals (2.05, fifth), blocks (1.00, eighth) and shooting percentage (.451, seventh). Allen was C-USA's Newcomer of the Year last season with Florida Atlantic. A first team all-conference honoree, Allen was second in the conference in scoring (22.2 points per game), third in rebounding (10.9) and fourth in steals (2.2).

About South Carolina State
The Bulldogs played just 10 games in the 2020-21 season, going 1-9 before canceling the remainder of their season in early February. The year prior, South Carolina State went 3-27, 2-14 in the MEAC. Trinity Klock reaped MEAC All-Rookie Team honors at the end of last season, averaging 11.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest.

S.C. State was picked to finish last in the eight-team MEAC this season. Klock also garnered Second Team Preseason All-MEAC distinctions.

The Series
The Monarchs and Bulldogs have played two times with ODU winning each. Old Dominion bested SCSU 79-63 in the first meeting on Dec. 29, 2012 before topping the Bulldogs 52-35 on Dec. 30, 2017. Both games took place at Chartway Arena.

What's Next
ODU's three-game homestand to open the season continues on Sunday, when the Monarchs host Auburn for a 2 p.m. tilt. Old Dominion handed the Tigers an 89-77 loss on the road in their last meeting on Nov. 14, 2019 behind 35 points from Wayne. That win was ODU's first over a Power 5 school since a win over Virginia on March 19, 2015.
