SAN DIEGO - Yuliia Starodubtseva and Tatsiana Sasnouskaya won four matches over the weekend and pushed Fiona Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty of North Carolina to the brink before falling to the UNC tandem in the ITA Fall Nationals 4-6, 6-2, 11-9 on Sunday.
"I'm overwhelmed with pride," ODU head coach Dominic Manilla said. "We took a devastating at All-Americans in the finals, there is really no other way to put it. The way these women bounced back to win the regional title and to again put themselves in position to win a national title is inspiring. Hats off to our good friends at UNC, they played championship tennis yesterday."
Starodubtseva and Sasnouskaya began the weekend with a 5-7, 6-4, 12-10 win over Mary Lewis and Maja Pietrowicz (MSU).
Starodubsteva and Sasnouskaya next took down Morgan Cross and Tatum Rice of Arkansas with a 6-2, 7-6 (9) victory to advance to the semifinals.
In the quarterfinals the Monarchs faced another UNC foe in Cameron Morra and Carson Tanguilg, defeating the tandem 6-3, 5-7, 8-6.
In the semifinals Starodubsteva and Sasnouskaya got past the No. 2 seed of the tournament, Tatiana Makarova and Jayci Goldsmith of Texas A&M, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 10-7.
