CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Old Dominion men's soccer team were bested by Charlotte 3-1 on Saturday night at Transamerica Field in Charlotte.

Charlotte (7-3-0, 2-1-0 C-USA) was quick to find the net, with less than a minute off the clock, Preston Popp got a header into the net off a cross from Koby Carr to put the 49ers ahead early.

In the 16th minute, Popp once again tallied another goal for Charlotte. Popp scored a left footed first-touch shot in the 18-yard box off of a through ball from Kameron Lacey and Joe Brito.

Lacey and Brito would rack up another assist in the 59th minute as they found Andre Vicharelli crashing the 18-yard box to get an insurance goal for the 49ers.

Old Dominion (2-5-1, 0-2-1 C-USA) continued pushing and earned a penalty kick opportunity in the 83rd minute of the game. Eliot Goldthorp scored the lone Monarch goal of the game. After tonight's performance, Goldthorp leads ODU with three goals, 18 shots, and eight shots on goal. ODU was led on the attack by Eamon McLaughlin with two shots, one shot on goal. Djibril Doumbia recorded three saves for nine shots faced.

"We dug ourselves too big of a hole early in the game and were never able to get out of it. The effort and commitment was there until the end, but too little, too late," ODU head coach Alan Dawson said.

The Monarchs will return to the ODU Soccer Complex to play Friday, October 15 at 7 p.m., when they will take on Kentucky.
