Monarchs Fall Short Against Blue Hens

NEWARK, Del. - The Old Dominion men's soccer team fell short on the road, losing 3-1 to Delaware on Wednesday night in Newark, Delaware.  

Old Dominion (2-9-1, 0-5-1 C-USA) scored first as Karan Mandair scored in the 10th minute of play from inside the 18-yard box off a pass from Ettore Casadei. The goal is Mandair's team-leading fourth of the year. 

Delaware (2-11-1, 0-7-0 CAA) tied the score in the 60th minute of play. Rex Twum recorded his first goal of the season as he was found on a through ball by chipped by Tiago Santos. 

The Blue Hens took the lead in the 75th minute from Josh Hesson finishing off of a pass from Ryan Mertz. 

Delaware scored an insurance goal in the 87th minute of the match. Mertz earned his second assist of the match playing a ball to Justin Ruth scored who his first goal of the season. 

The Monarchs were led on offense by Mandair with the lone ODU goal, Casadei with the assist and two shots, and Djibril Doumbia who made three saves on 10 Delaware shots faced.  

ODU head coach Alan Dawson said, " This is a very disappointing loss after controlling the game with a 1-0 lead. We were unable to put the game away. We had numerous easy chances but allowed Delaware to hang around and then defended very poorly for the last 25 minutes ".   

The Monarchs will return to the ODU Soccer Complex to take on UAB on Sunday, October 31 in their final home match of the season. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. and the match will be streamed through CUSA.tv.
