Volleyball Travels to Marshall for Key C-USA Series

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion volleyball team travels to Marshall for a pair of matches between two teams currently jockeying for fourth place in Conference USA's East Division and a spot in the conference tournament. Friday's match begins at 6 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start scheduled for Saturday. Both matches are streaming live on ESPN+.
 
About ODU
The Monarchs are coming off a split at home with Charlotte last Friday and Saturday. ODU fell 3-0 to the 49ers in the first match before winning by the same score the following day. Old Dominion trailed 24-21 in the first set on Saturday before eventually winning 26-24 and taking the next two sets.
 
Kira Smith tallied a personal-best 15 kills in Saturday's win, attacking at a .344 clip and chipping in eight digs and three blocks. Smith led ODU across the weekend with 4.50 kills per set on a .297 hitting percentage and added 2.17 digs per set. For her efforts, C-USA recognized the native of San Diego as its Freshman of the Week.
 
ODU enters the weekend ranked fourth in the conference and 62nd nationally with 2.41 blocks per set. Olivia De Jesus (1.16) and Hailey Duncan (1.12) are sixth and seventh in C-USA, respectively, in blocks per set. Additionally, Duncan's attack percentage of .372 is the fourth-highest mark in the conference.
 
Teresa Atilano is fifth in C-USA with 9.31 assists per set.
 
About Marshall
The Thundering Herd collected a pair of 3-0 sweeps at Florida Atlantic last weekend. As a team, Marshall tallied 23 total blocks against the Owls (3.83 per set). Essence Clerkley had 13 total blocks in those two matches, including nine in the first meeting, en route to C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
For the season, Marshall leads Division I with 201 total team blocks and is 24th nationally with 2.61 blocks per set. Destiny Leon ranks second in the conference and 49th in DI with 1.26 blocks per set.
 
Ciara DeBell leads the Thundering Herd with 3.26 kills per set on a .213 hitting percentage. Sydney Lostumo averages 8.06 attacks per set, and Sarah Schank averages 4.73 digs per set.

ODU lost both matches with Marshall in the spring 2021 season.

The Monarchs return home for a pair of matches with FIU on Friday, Oct. 22 (6 p.m.) and Saturday, Oct. 23 (2 p.m.).
