CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. – A Marlon de Bruijne overtime goal lifted the No. 19 Old Dominion field hockey team (7-2, 2-1 BIG EAST) over Villanova (4-7, 1-2 BIG EAST) by a 3-2 score on Friday afternoon at the Villanova Field Hockey Field. The Monarchs had a 2-0 lead, before Villanova pulled its keeper and scored two goals in the final 53 seconds of regulation to force overtime.
Just 1:09 into overtime, de Bruijne finished a Frederique Zandbergen pass to seal the deal on an ODU victory. The goal was de Bruijne's ninth of the season and also marked her third game-winner this year.
"That was a crazy few minutes, and I'm glad we came out on top with a great finish from Marlon," said ODU head coach Andrew Griffiths. "Although we played some good hockey at times, we didn't play with enough edge and sharpness. We are still playing like a young team at times, so it's another chance for us to grow, while coming home with a win."
Zandbergen, the reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, fired a shot past the Wildcats goalkeeper to give ODU a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. The goal was the third in as many games for Zandbergen. Ilse Westera was credited with the assist.
Old Dominion outshot Villanova 4-1 and took the only two corners of the first half.
Just 3:05 into the second half, Alix Marien fed de Bruijne, who scored to give ODU a 2-0 lead.
With 53 seconds remaining in regulation, a Meghan Mitchell goal to cut Villanova's deficit to 2-1.
32 seconds later and with 11 seconds to play in the fourth quarter, Mitchell struck again for the Wildcats sending the match to overtime, where de Bruijne ultimately spoiled Villanova's senior day.
For the match, ODU held advantages for shots (15-9), as well as corners (6-4). Cam MacGillivray was credited with five saves in the cage for Old Dominion.
The Monarchs have now won seven of their last eight contests.
Old Dominion will return home for a Sunday, October 3 non-conference match against Richmond at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex for a 12 p.m. start. Sunday's game will stream on Monarch Media.
