de Bruijne, MacGillivray and Zandbergen Sweep BIG EAST Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va. – Marlon de Bruijne, Cam MacGillivray and Frederique Zandbergen of the Old Dominion field hockey team swept the BIG EAST weekly honors, as de Bruijne was named Offensive Player of the Week, MacGillivray earned Defensive Player of the Week and Zandbergen garnered Freshman of the Week accolades.
 
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Marlon de Bruijne, Old Dominion, So., F (Den Bosch, Netherlands)

Old Dominion sophomore forward Marlon de Bruijne scored a total of four goals in a 2-0 week that had the No. 21 Monarchs shut out BIG EAST opponent Quinnipiac 7-0, and upset No. 11 Virginia, 2-1. de Bruijne had a second-half hat trick against the Bobcats, the Monarchs' first BIG EAST win of the season. She took eight shots, six on goal. In the match at No. 11 Virginia, de Bruijne dished out an assist in the 50th minute to tie the match at 1-1. Just 1:43 later, de Bruijne fired the game-winning goal for the road victory in Charlottesville. de Bruijne leads the Monarchs in goals (7) as well as points (15).
 
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Cam MacGillivray, Old Dominion, RS-Sr., GK (Calgary, Canada)
Old Dominion senior goalie Cam MacGillivray went 2-0 in the cage for the No. 21 Monarchs, with a conference victory and a win over No. 11 Virginia on the road. MacGillivray made three saves on five faced shots in a shutout victory against league-opponent Quinnipiac on Friday. On Sunday against the Cavaliers, MacGillivray faced a total of 12 shots, making five saves, while allowing just one goal. Old Dominion won 2-1 against Virginia and 7-0 against Quinnipiac. MacGillivray has 33 saves for the season with a 1.36 goals against average.
 
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Frederique Zandbergen, Old Dominion, Fr., M (Tilburg, Netherlands)
Freshman midfielder Frederique Zandbergen scored her first two goals of her young collegiate career this weekend, both in a 7-0 win for No. 21 Old Dominion against Quinnipiac. Zandbergen scored the only goal of the opening half against the Bobcats to give ODU an early 1-0 lead. She struck again in the 43rd minute to give the Monarchs a 3-0 lead. Her two scores came on just two shot attempts, coming off the bench. Zandbergen also played key minutes against No. 11 Virginia, a 2-1 win for Old Dominion.
 
The Monarchs have now claimed victory in six of their last seven matches. Old Dominion will return to action on Friday, when ODU travels to Villanova for a 3 p.m. start.
