NORFOLK, Va. - The No. 20 nationally ranked Old Dominion field hockey team (4-1) scored all three of its goals in the second half to take down VCU (2-2) by a 3-0 score on Sunday afternoon at Cary Street Field. With the victory, the Monarchs extended their win streak to four.
"Today's performance was our best of the season," said ODU associate head coach Natalie Holder. "We were excellent in both our defending and attacking end and scored some beautiful goals. We are really proud of how the team played together and stuck to the game plan. We have been growing each week and have been building towards a complete team performance that we showed today."
Old Dominion controlled the opening 30 minutes, as the Monarchs attempted all seven of the first half shots, as well as the only four corners. However, the two teams remained scoreless at the half.
Just 34 seconds into the second half, Ilse Westera scored her first goal of the season to give ODU a 1-0 lead.
Alix Marien made it a 2-0 lead for Old Dominion in the 49th minute after dribbling past the VCU keeper on the right side. The goal was Marien's first of her collegiate career.
With 2:40 remaining in regulation, Marlon de Bruijne extended the Monarchs lead to 3-0 after finishing a saved Delphine Le Jeune shot.
For the match, ODU held a 16-7 advantage for shots. Cam MacGillivray was credited with five saves in the cage for the Monarchs.
Old Dominion will kick off play in the BIG EAST with a road match at No. 6 nationally ranked UConn on September 17 at 2:30 p.m. The Huskies are the nine-time reigning BIG EAST Tournament champions, and the two sides have squared off in the tournament final each of the past two seasons.
