NORFOLK, Va. – Former Old Dominion field hockey team practice player, Christian DeAngelis, helped lead the U.S. U-22 Men's National Field Hockey Team to a bronze medal in the Junior Pan American Championship after beating Canada in a shootout last weekend.
This is only the second time in tournament history that the USA men have won bronze, with the first coming in 2008. Although USA missed out qualifying for the 2021 FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup (JWC) from this event, they are the first reserve should a team pull out. The 2021 men's JWC is set to take place November 25 to December 5 in India.
"It meant a lot to me because I've been with this team for a long time now and have been able to see everyone grow individually and together as a whole," DeAngelis explained. "Especially the opportunity to lead them to a bronze medal for the second time ever for a USA men's junior team."
DeAngelis has been a member of the U.S. Junior Men's National Field Hockey Team since 2013.
"ODU helped prepare me by being able to play five to six times a week with an incredible staff, who were always willing to help develop myself," said DeAngelis.
The Doylestown, Pennsylvania native was part of the ODU field hockey program from 2017-2021.
"I still keep up with ODU field hockey and like to see how they're doing in the season, as well as catch up with some of my old teammates," DeAngelis concluded.
DeAngelis graduated from Old Dominion in the spring of 2021 with a degree in sport management.
