WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Old Dominion (0-0) men's soccer team is set to hit the road to take on American University (0-0) on Sunday Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. The contest is the season opener for both teams.
ODU finished its 2021 spring season 1-4-3 overall and 0-4-3 in Conference USA. The Monarchs have a young team this year but retained its leaders including Djibril Doumbia who was All-Conference USA Third Team, USA Defensive Player of the Week. He ranked 17th in the NCAA for saves per game (4.62) and 35th in Division I for total saves (37). Ettore Casadei, ODU's top goal scorer last season, has also returned for another year. He was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman and All-State Second Team.
Sunday will also be the season opener for American University. The Eagles had three exhibition matches leading to Sunday's opener. They finished 4-2-3 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play (what conference?) in the spring 2021 season. American retained its top scorer, David Coly, who had seven goals and 17 shots in the 2021 spring season.
The last time ODU and AU played against each other was in 2004 at the William & Mary Tournament. That match went into double overtime but resulted in a 1-1 tie.
