NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion volleyball team kicks off the 2021 season by hosting the Old Dominion Invitational, which runs Friday and Saturday at the ODU Volleyball Center. The invitational features six total matches across two days, and the participants include the Monarchs, Hampton, Loyola (Md.) and West Virginia. Live stats are available for every match, and each of ODU's three contests will be streamed live on CUSA TV.

About ODU
The Monarchs posted a 7-11 overall record in the spring and remained in contention for a spot in the Conference USA Championship right until their final conference match of the year. ODU returns 13 letterwinners and all its starters from that inaugural season.

Alessia Sgherza garnered All-C-USA Second Team honors in the spring after pacing Old Dominion in kills (220) and adding 141 digs, second-most on the team. Teresa Atilano booked a spot on the conference all-freshman team after logging 586 assists as the team's primary setter.

Other key returners include starting libero Jordan Daniel, who was first on the team with 199 digs. Hailey Duncan was second among all Monarchs with 140 kills while posting a .284 attack percentage and also led ODU with 58 blocks. Ashley Peroe tallied 114 kills, 83 digs and 21 blocks.

Earlier in the summer, ODU was selected as the host of the 2021 Conference USA Championship, which will run Nov. 19-21.

About Hampton
The Pirates return to competitive action for the first time since the 2019 season and do so under the direction of first-year head coach Sonja Maksimovic. Maksimovic is no stranger to Hampton, having played there from 2011-2014 and winning a pair of conference titles. She has also served the Pirates as a graduate assistant then assistant coach before being elevated to the lead position.

HU posted an 8-17 overall mark in 2019 and returns its leader in kills (Gabby Calloway, 275) and digs (Jessica Pugh, 358) as well as Isis Black, who was second on the team with 80 blocks.

About Loyola (Md.)
The Greyhounds went 1-5 in the abbreviated spring season. Loyola boasts one of the top liberos in the nation in Katie Forsythe, a three-time Patriot League Libero of the Year. Forsythe is Division I's active leader in career digs per set (6.02) and currently ranks third in DI history in that category.

In attack, the Greyhounds feature Abby Hamilton. The native of Colgate, Wisconsin led the team with 95 kills in the spring and enters the season just 98 shy of 1,000 for her career. She topped double figures in kills in all six games last season and has finished 54 of her 67 career matches with 10 or more kills.

About West Virginia
The Mountaineers turned in a 10-11 record during the spring, finishing 8-8 in the Big 12. WVU returns six letterwinners from the spring, including Briana Lynch. A member of the All-Big 12 Preseason Team and an all-conference first teamer in the spring, Lynch ranked 10th in the Big 12 with 1.06 blocks per set and was third with a .363 hitting percentage in the spring.

Additionally, Lacey Zerwas was fourth in the conference with 9.73 assists per set last season, and Alexa Hasting was fifth with 3.81 digs per set.
