Norfolk, Va. – The Old Dominion women's soccer team (1-1) fell to NC State (1-0-1) by a 2-1 score on a rainy Sunday evening at the Old Dominion Soccer Complex.
"First of all with the weather delay we were pleased to be able to play. NC State are a quality side with talent throughout. I thought they started really well and scored a great individual goal. After that we settled into the game more and got closer to them. Second half we really pushed and I thought our play merited the equalizing goal".
With the rain finally passed through, Old Dominion and NC State took the field at Old Dominion Soccer Complex. The Wolfpack would not only get the first shot and the first corner of the game, but also scored the first goal just eight minutes into the match. Jameese Joseph was able to get space from the ODU defense inside the 18 yard box, finding the upper right corner of the goal.
ODU got on the board in the 60th minute of play as Gry Boe Thrysøe redirected a header into the right side of the net, off of a corner kick taken by Malia Mariano and a touch from Emily Roberts.
With the game tied and the clock counting down with four minutes remaining, NC State was able to steal the win as Lulu Guttenburg swung in a corner kick and Jenna Butler would get a head on it for the game-winner.
Old Dominion out shot NC State, 7-6, however the Wolfpack led in corner kicks, 6-5.
"That's the frustrating thing for us as a group tonight. We worked so hard, showed our quality, and despite out shooting them, just couldn't get over the line. We have a very disappointed team tonight. I'm glad about that because it shows we are at the stage we want to be winning games like these."
Old Dominion will return to the pitch on Thursday, Aug. 26, when the Monarchs travel to Williamsburg, Virginia for a match at William & Mary.
