NORFOLK, Va. – Head coach of the Old Dominion University volleyball team Fred Chao announced today the schedule for the upcoming 2021 season. The Monarchs' slate is highlighted by 14 home matches, including a pair of early-season multi-team events, and the ODU Volleyball Center will play host to the Conference USA Championship Nov. 19-21.
"We are excited about our fall schedule for a variety of reasons," Chao said. "First, our nonconference portion offers a strong range of opponents who will continue to give us an indication of the progress we are making. Certainly, we are grateful to have West Virginia back on the schedule, but each of the teams will push and stretch us to continue building on what we've established in our first year."
The Monarchs open the season on Aug. 27 with matches against Hampton and West Virginia before playing Loyola (Md.) the following day. The next weekend, ODU travels to Boone, North Carolina, where it plays East Tennessee State and Appalachian State on Sept. 3 and Kansas City on Sept. 4.
Old Dominion is on the road once again on Sept. 10 and 11 for matches against Liberty, Loyola Marymount and Purdue Fort Wayne in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Monarchs then host another multi-team event before jumping into Conference USA action. ODU plays Radford and Buffalo on Sept. 17 before welcoming crosstown rival Norfolk State on Sept. 18.
ODU opens C-USA action at Florida Atlantic on Sept. 24 and 25 before hosting UAB for a nonconference series on Oct. 1 and 2. The Monarchs then play Charlotte at home on Oct. 8 and 9 before traveling to Marshall on Oct. 15 and 16. Old Dominion winds down the regular season by playing two of its final three C-USA series at the ODU Volleyball Center, starting with FIU on Oct. 22 and 23. Then the Monarchs play their final road series of the season at Western Kentucky on Oct. 29 and 30 before wrapping up the regular season at home against Middle Tennessee on Nov. 5 and 6.
The Monarchs will serve as hosts for the Conference USA Championship in just their second year as a program. The championship runs Nov. 19-21.
"Our conference schedule allows us to play the same opponents as this past spring," Chao said. "I know all the teams are better than they were, so we have to work hard to pace our progress to earn the opportunity to compete in the C-USA tournament. It goes without saying that being selected to host the tournament puts a different wrinkle on the desire to make it. I'm looking forward to fully opening the doors for capacity crowds throughout the season and enjoying the challenges that each match presents."
