NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University Athletics mourns the loss of former field hockey player and Hall of Famer Maaike Hilbrand '93, who passed away on June 1. Hilbrand, a three-time national champion, was inducted into the ODU Hall of Fame in 2002.

Hilbrand was a two-time First Team All-American, receiving the distinction in 1991 and 1992. She helped the Monarchs to a trio of national championships, including undefeated seasons in 1991 and 1992. With Hilbrand on the field, ODU also claimed the national title in 1988 and finished as runner-up in 1989. The Monarchs posted a 101-3 overall record in Hilbrand's four seasons.

One of the most-prolific offensive talents in Division I field hockey history, Hilbrand still shares the career goals record of 167 with fellow Monarch Marina Di Giacomo and is second only to Di Giacomo in career points. She led the nation in goals scored and total points in all four years she competed and still owns four of the top-20 goal-scoring seasons in DI history.

A Second Team GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American, she graduated with a degree in marketing in 1993.
