Trice Named Semifinalist for 2021 Dick Howser Trophy

As the baseball equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, the Dick Howser Trophy is the annual national award for the outstanding collegiate baseball player.

NORFOLK, Va. – Carter Trice of the Old Dominion baseball team was named one of 42 semifinalists for the 2021 Dick Howser Trophy, which is the annual national player of the year honor as selected by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
 
Trice, a native of Mechanicsville, Virginia, is third in Conference USA and leads all freshman with a .364 batting average. He tops all C-USA freshmen in runs scored (50), hits (72), homers (12) and total bases (129) and is second among league freshman with 48 runs batted in. He had 20 multi-hit games on the year and was 5-for-6 with a pair of homers and seven RBI in ODU's 15-7 win over Marshall.
 
The Dick Howser Trophy is a national sponsorship that was created on behalf of Dick Howser to promote baseball excellence and scholastic achievement for collegiate baseball. Education is one of the country's biggest concerns and through sports will bring an enhanced national focus. As the baseball equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, the Dick Howser Trophy is the annual national award for the outstanding collegiate baseball player. The NCBWA votes for the recipient based on nominees' performance, character, leadership and courage – all features to be emulated in memory of the late Dick Howser. The trophy, a bronze bust of the late Dick Howser, is permanently displayed at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, home of the Tampa Bay Rays.
 
This is the 34th year of the Dick Howser Trophy. The finalists will be announced on Thursday, June 10. Due to COVID-19 protocols at TD Ameritrade Stadium in downtown Omaha, the home of the College World Series for the ninth year, the announcement of this year's winner will be done via Zoom. The winner will be unveiled on MLB Network and then, a press conference with the winner will be held after the announcement is made. The date and time for the announcement will be announced in the near future.
 
This year's candidates hail from 13 different conferences and 33 different schools. The Southeastern Conference leads the way with 14 semifinalists, followed by the Big 12 with six, Atlantic Coast with four, American Athletic, Conference USA and Pac-12 with three, Atlantic 10 and Sun Belt with two and Mid-Eastern Athletic, Missouri Valley, Mountain West, Ohio Valley and Southwestern Athletic Conferences each with one representative.

Trice and the Monarchs take on Florida Atlantic in the first round of the C-USA Championship on Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET on ESPN+. The championship is being held at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park on the campus of Louisiana Tech.
