ORLANDO, Fla. - No. 51 Yuliia Starodubtseva of the Old Dominion women's tennis team took down No. 15 nationally ranked Carolyn Campana of Wake Forest in three sets (6-0, 4-6, 6-3) in the First Round of the NCAA Singles Tournament at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. Today's victory marked the first singles win in the NCAA Tournament for the program since 2004, when ODU's Nataly Cahana defeated Jessica Ferguson (LSU) 7-5, 6-2.
"I'm extremely happy for Yuliia," said ODU head coach Dominic Manilla. "She works very hard and I'm very happy for her today."
Starodubtseva (Kakhovka, Ukraine) stormed out of the gates, claiming the first set by a 6-0 score. Campana (Hillsborough, Cali.) responded with a 6-4 second set victory. In the third set, Starodubtseva jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 6-3 win.
"I worked so hard for this," Starodubtseva explained after the match. "I'm very happy to get the win. Go Monarchs!"
Starodubtseva will take on the winner of No. 21 Jessica Failla (Pepperdine) versus No. 122 Anna Riedmiller (Denver). Starodubtseva's Round of 32 match will take place tomorrow (TBA start time).
