Starodubtseva/Yakubovich Set for Boar’s Head Resort Women’s Open

NORFOLK, Va. - Yulia Starodubtseva and Alesya Yakubovich of the Old Dominion women's tennis team are set to compete in the Boar's Head Resort Women's Open, which runs through May 2 at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Virginia.
 
This is the 20th year of the ITF World Tennis Tour W60-level tournament, which was not held last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
Starodubtseva/Yakubovich received one of just two doubles wild card bids to the Boar's Head Resort Women's Open. Starodubtseva/Yakubovich will first take on No. 3 seed Tereza Mihalikova (Slovakia) and Ingrid Neel (USA) later today around 5 p.m. EST.

The ODU duo spent over half of the season nationally ranked No. 8 by the ITA, as the tandem ended last year ranked No. 7, which was the highest in program history. This season, Starodubtseva/Yakubovich had signature wins over No. 7 Hule/Allen (Florida State), No. 24 Machalova/Allen (Ole Miss) and No. 58 Kozar/Danailova (Virginia Tech). The duo went 3-0 against regional opponents, 5-3 in their non-conference matches and 4-2 on the road, while playing No. 1 doubles for ODU all season.
 
The No. 86 ranked player in the world, Madison Brengle, highlights the field as she is the No. 1 seed in singles. Current No. 121 in the world for singles, Kristie Ahn is the No. 3 seed. Ahn reached the round of 16 at the 2019 US Open. At the 2020 US Open, Serena Williams defeated Ahn 7-6, 6-3.
