HOUSTON, Texas – The Old Dominion women's soccer team fell to No. 25 nationally ranked Rice by a 3-0 score in the Conference USA quarterfinals on Tuesday night at Holloway Field. Entering Tuesday night's contest, Old Dominion was riding a four match unbeaten streak with its last loss coming on March 5, while outscoring its opponents 8-1 during the run.
"When you lose as a coach, it's natural to be disappointed; however, I cannot remember losing a game and yet being more proud of my team," said ODU head coach Angie Hind. "Rice is a very good side and scored two fantastic set play goals, but I felt in a soccer sense we played some fantastic stuff tonight. Their keeper was the difference. Our players gave everything tonight, absolutely everything and I could not be more proud of them as players and how they have represented our program."
The Monarchs (No. 4 seed from East division) took five of the match's first eight shots; however, it was Rice (No. 1 seed from West division) who struck first in the 22nd minute when Madison Kent scored her first goal of the season off a rebounded save by ODU's Kasey Perry.
Rice's goalkeeper, Bella Killgore, found the back of Old Dominion's net off a free kick in the 29th minute to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. The goal was the fourth of the season for the Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Year.
Rice (11-2-0) made it a 3-0 match when Mijke Roelfsema curled in a corner kick in the 63rd minute. The win extended the Owls win streak to seven.
For the game, ODU (4-5-2) held advantages for shots (21-15) and corners (5-3). Perry was credited with seven saves in goal for Old Dominion.
