WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – In the regular season finale, the No. 35 Old Dominion women's tennis team took down William & Mary by a 5-2 score on Saturday afternoon at the Millie West Tennis Facility. ODU has now won its last seven matches, while outscoring its opponents 39-8 during the win streak.
"Today was a tough match," explained ODU head coach Dominic Manilla. "Credit to William & Mary for pushing us to our limit. We worked hard all week and we knew going into today that we would be faced with an environment that we may not prefer. I'm very proud of our team battling though and getting the team win. We finished the season strong, and I feel good about where we are positioned heading into the postseason."
ODU (9-4) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point with wins from Holly Hutchinson/Tatsiana Sasnouskaya (6-1) and No. 38 Yulia Starodubtseva/Alesya Yakubovich (6-2).
The Monarchs picked up singles wins from Alexandra Viktorovich (6-1, 0-1 retired), No. 53 Sasnouskaya (6-4, 6-0), Yakubovich (6-0, 7-6) and No. 41 Starodubtseva (6-3, 4-6, 10-3).
The Monarchs finished the regular season with a 7-0 record against teams within the state of Virginia (William & Mary twice, VCU twice, Virginia Tech, James Madison and Norfolk State).
William & Mary's (3-8) head coach is Toni Bickford, who was the former associate head coach for Old Dominion. Bickford is currently in the midst of her third season at the helm in Williamsburg. Entering Saturday's match the Tribe was undefeated when playing at home.
Old Dominion will next travel to Denton, Texas for the Conference USA Tournament on April 22-25.
