WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Jakob Henriksson carded a final-round 3-under 67 to take individual medalist honors at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate, hosted by William & Mary. Henriksson becomes the first Monarch freshman to win an event since Nick Rencis took first place at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational in April 2016.
"I'm very proud of the team for a second-place finish," head coach Murray Rudisill said. "We were right in it the entire last round, and it is fun to have a chance to win. That's what we work hard for, to be in those positions to win in the final round."
Henriksson won the event going away at 5-under 205 (66-72-67), finishing six strokes ahead of runner-up Lou Baker of Richmond, and was the lone player to finish the event under par. The native of Stockholm, Sweden made the turn at 1-under following birdies on the fourth, sixth and eighth holes. Henriksson moved to 2-under with a birdie on the 11th hole but quickly dropped a shot on the 13th.
On the 14th hole, Henriksson teed up with his driver. On his downswing, the head of his club broke off at the shaft. After consultation with rules officials, that swing was considered a non-stroke, and Henriksson was able to retake his tee shot, this time with a 3-wood. He closed out with three birdies over the final four holes, including one on the par-5 15th. For the event, Henriksson went 4-under on the par 5s, which matches the best mark among the field.
Henriksson ended the tournament with 14 total birdies, the most among the 88 participants. He shared the second-best scoring mark on par 4s at 1-over and was tied for fifth in par-3 scoring (-2). In his nine rounds of competitive play this spring, Henriksson has posted scores of par or better five times.
As a team, the Monarchs held firm in second place after firing a 286 in the third round on the par-70, 6,799-yard Golden Horseshoe Gold Course. ODU finished four shots back of VCU and eight strokes ahead of William & Mary at 863 (282-295-286).
Gustav Fransson saved his best round of the event for Tuesday, carding an even-par 70 to finish tied for 22nd at 220. Carter Morgan placed in a tie for 17th at 218 after a final-round 75.
Chris Ayers logged a 74 on Tuesday en route to a 222 and a tie for 30th. Mason McCoy rounded out the Monarch contingent with a 75.
The Monarchs racked up 41 total birdies across the three rounds, second only to Temple's 43. ODU was the second-best team on both par 3s (-1) and par 5s (-2).
The Old Dominion men's golf team returns to action with the Golfweek Challenge on April 5 and 6 at the True Blue Golf Club on Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
