NORFOLK, Va. – VCU scored seven runs in the first two innings on its way to a 12-5 win over Old Dominion University baseball on Wednesday evening.
Old Dominion (12-4) still trailed 7-0 in the fourth when Kyle Battle got the Monarchs on the board with an RBI single.
In the fifth inning, Robbie Petracci made the score 7-2 on a sacrifice fly, and after a Robbie Barrientos walk, Matt Coutney hit a three-run homer to push ODU to within two at 7-5.
VCU (9-7) pushed its lead 11-5 with four runs in the eighth. Michael Haydak hit a two-run double and the Rams scored two more runs on a passed ball and an error. VCU tacked on a run in the ninth for the final 12-5 score.
Coutney led the Monarchs offensively with a pair of hits and three RBIs.
Bradford Webb earned the win for VCU with 3.2 innings of one-run ball to earn the win.
The Monarchs host George Mason on Friday at 3 p.m.
