Volleyball Falls on the Road to Charlotte, 3-0

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Old Dominion women's volleyball team fell in three sets (25-16, 25-16, 25-18) to Charlotte on Sunday afternoon.
 
ODU is now 7-5 overall and 4-3 in C-USA play.
 
Madeline Rudd led the Monarchs in kills (nine) and Teresa Atilano led ODU in assists (23) in the loss.
 
Charlotte (10-4, 8-3 C-USA) used a 6-1 run in the opening frame to break away early from ODU. Head coach Fred Chao utilized a timeout, but the 49ers continued their momentum, winning the first set, 25-16.  
 
ODU kept the second set tight, but Charlotte's 7-2 run to open the frame was too much to overcome. Following an ODU timeout, the Monarchs compiled an 8-2 run to get within one of Charlotte. The 49ers responded with its own 8-2 scoring run to lead, 22-14. Rudd knocked down back-to-back kills, but the 49ers closed out with three points off ODU errors to win the second set, 25-16.
 
The Monarchs fell behind again in the third set, 7-4, but fought their way back to knot the game up, 7-7 with a 3-0 scoring run. ODU took a 12-10 lead via an Atilano kill and a Charlotte error, but the 49ers responded with a 6-1 scoring run to regain a 16-13 lead over the Monarchs. Momentum went in favor of the 49ers the rest of the way as they closed out the third frame with a 9-5 run to edge ODU, 25-18 and sweep the Sunday afternoon match.

The Monarchs will close out road action, Monday, March 14 as they take on Charlotte once more at 1 p.m.
