NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association announced that former Old Dominion head coach Sue Stahl will be inducted into the association's Hall of Fame in November during the IWLCA Awards Banquet held in conjunction with the IWLCA Convention in Dallas, Texas.
Stahl coached collegiately from 1970 through her retirement in 2011 and won four national titles – collecting two AIAW championships as an assistant at Ursinus and two NCAA titles as an assistant at Temple.
As the head coach at ODU, Stahl recorded 142 wins, won three Colonial Athletic Association championships and was named CAA Coach of the Year in 1995. She was the head coach of the U.S. Women's National Team from 1998-2005 and was honored as the Outstanding World Cup Coach by the International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations in 1997. Stahl coached the U.S. World Cup Team to four consecutive championships in 1989, 1993, 1997 and 2001. She was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1999 and the IWLCA Trailblazer Hall of Fame in 2017 and has also received the Diane Geppi Aikens Memorial Award from the IWLCA and the Nancy Chance Award from US Lacrosse.
"Sue was a massive influence on my life and on the lives of many others," current ODU head coach Heather Holt said. "She is such an honest person with high standards, and she held all of her players to those standards at all times. She did everything as a coach for the right reasons – for the love of the game and for her players."
Joining Stahl in the class of 2021 are current Gettysburg head coach Carol Cantele and former Delaware coach Janet Smith.
"The Hall of Fame committee did a fantastic job selecting this class of honorees from among all of the well-qualified coaches that have been nominated," President of the IWLCA and head coach at Bowdoin Liz Grote said. "Carol, Janet, and Sue have each amassed a significant measure of success on the field, but their impact is even greater when you consider the positive influence they have had on all of the young women they coached during their career, their records of service to the sport, and their contributions to the coaching profession."
Tickets for the 2021 IWLCA Awards Banquet and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will go on sale Oct. 1 and will remain available on the IWLCA website through Nov. 16. The IWLCA Hall of Fame was established in May 2017 to recognize and honor outstanding career achievements by collegiate women's lacrosse coaches. The class of 2021 will be the fourth class of honorees to be inducted.
