NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women's soccer team (1-0) defeated East Carolina (0-1) by a 1-0 score on Thursday night at the ODU Soccer Complex in the season opener for both teams.
The Monarchs struck for the match's only goal in the 72nd minute, when Yuliia Khrystiuk played a pass into Emily Garrick, who drilled the ball from the top of the box into the left side of the Pirates' net.
"I am really pleased to come out of this game with our first win of the season," said ODU head coach Angie Hind. "I thought ECU was very good, athletic, physical and really put us under a lot of pressure throughout the game, which made it difficult at times for us to play our way. There were many positives to take out of this match, especially the performance of our back line; I thought they were excellent tonight. Overall, I'm so pleased with the win and considering it's our first competitive game in 15 months, I'm very encouraged with the intensity we played with for much of the game."
The Monarchs defense held East Carolina to just two shots for the contest.
For the game, ODU held advantages for shots, 7-2, as well as corner kicks, 4-3.
Old Dominion will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 3:00 p.m. EST, when the Monarchs travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on N.C. State. Sunday afternoon's game will stream on the ACC Network Extra.
