NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women's tennis team (3-4) claimed the doubles point and then won five of six singles matches (four coming in straight sets) en route to a 6-1 victory over William & Mary (0-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
"Doubles was impressive, it is so hard to win that many games the way we did," said ODU head coach Dominic Manilla. "I was impressed with our focus and attention to details that we played with and we were able to carry that momentum over to singles. It felt great to get back and play at home and it always feels good to beat William & Mary."
Winning in straight sets in singles for Old Dominion were Yulia Starodubtseva (6-3, 6-4), Tatsiana Sasnouskaya (6-2, 6-2), Alesya Yakubovich (6-4, 6-3) and Shahar Biran (6-3, 6-0). Brooke Pilkington handled business in the third set tiebreaker over Raffaela Alhach (6-2, 4-6, 11-9).
In doubles, Hutchinson/Sasnouskaya (6-0) and Pilkington/Viktorovich (6-1) clinched the point for ODU.
Old Dominion will be right back in action tomorrow, Sunday. Feb. 28, when the Monarchs welcome VCU (5-4) to the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center for a 1 p.m. start. The Rams enter Sunday's match riding a three match win-streak. All home indoor ODU tennis matches are closed to the general public due to COVID-19 restrictions.
