CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference (MAC) wrestling coaches announced the first of two January weight class individual rankings and team rankings in conjunction with the league office on Thursday afternoon, and Old Dominion University's wrestling team (1-5, 1-1 MAC) ranks in a tie for third in the conference. Five wrestling Monarchs were featured in the individual rankings as well.
Four of the five ranked Monarchs are featured in the top-three in their weight classes. No. 11 Sa'Derian Perry earned the top spot at 141 pounds for the first time this season after proving he was worthy of the honor at the South Beach Duals. In ODU's match against Missouri in Fort Lauderdale, Perry took down then-No. 8 Grant Leeth in a 7-3 win by decision. Leeth, who was ranked first at 141 pounds in December, now sits in second behind Perry in the updated league rankings.
At 165 pounds, Shane Jones, who holds an 11-8 record this season, holds steady as the second-ranked wrestler in the MAC, behind Buffalo senior Troy Keller. No. 15 Killian Cardinale makes his first appearance in the MAC rankings, checking in at third in the 125-pound rankings. Cardinale has a team-high three wins against ranked opponents so far this season.
At 157 pounds, No. 13 Larry Early falls from first to third in the league rankings behind Rider's Jesse Dellavecchia and Missouri's Jarrett Jacques. Early faced off against Jacques in the South Beach Duals and lost in a 7-1 decision against the then-11th ranked wrestler in the nation.
The fifth Monarch featured in the league rankings is Antonio Agee at 184 pounds. Agee rounds out the list of the top-six wrestlers in the conference in his weight class and has wrestled to a 10-9 record.
As a team, the Monarchs garnered 20.0 points, placing them in a tie with Lock Haven for third in the conference. No. 21 Missouri earned the top spot for the fourth time in a row, earning 37.0 points, with Rider placing second with 24.0 points.
The Monarchs will compete in the 40th Annual Virginia Duals, an event that begins tomorrow, January 10, when ODU takes on Penn at 11 a.m. If the Monarchs beat the Quakers, they will face the winner of the No. 22 Virginia vs. MAC opponent Kent State matchup on Saturday afternoon. If Penn gets the better of ODU, then the Monarchs will wrestle the loser of the Virginia/Kent State match later in the day tomorrow at 3 p.m.
ODU will compete in their first home matches of the season next week when it welcomes Lock Haven and Rider to Chartway arena on Friday, January 17 and Sunday, January 19, respectively. You can get your tickets to the two MAC matchups and every other home dual this season by visiting ynottix.com.
