Emily Carella, Madeline Willson and Caleb Wyninger

ODUSports.com recently polled members of the ODU swim team. Last week was the first edition and we asked why they chose the sport of swimming. Today we asked their major and why. Emily Carella, Caleb Wyninger and Madeline Willson answered this week's question.

Emily Carella – JR – Davidsonville, Md.
I am majoring in special education. I have always dreamt of being a teacher and as I got older I gained a desire to be a special education teacher. The opportunities I was given growing up being able to interact with a wonderful group of people at Special Olympics as a volunteer swim coach, a camp counselor to those who had disabilities, and a friend in the club Best Buddies I knew I wanted to dedicate a part of my life to this community. I believe that all children are capable of success and achieving their goals, and as an educator it will be my job to provide all the possible opportunities to each student to be successful. As a student in Old Dominion's teaching program, I have had classroom experiences in Norfolk public schools that have been beyond wonderful. I am so excited to take the knowledge I have gained, and continue to gain during my last year as a monarch into my own classroom in the near future.

Caleb Wyninger – So. – Lake Charles, La.
My major is nuclear medicine, with a potential minor in criminal justice. The reason that I chose nuclear medicine is because of its uniqueness of a major dealing with physics and chemistry. I also really wanted to do something medically and that has always been my plan.

Madeline Willson – Fr. – Clinton Township, Mich.
My major is civil engineering because though I love the arts, I also have an appreciation for math. Civil engineering can require some amounts of creativity along with smarts. I found that I could possibly choose civil engineering and help others with it. For example, I could focus on getting drinking water to those without it. I could help build homes for those without. I could help people and that's what I have always wanted to do. So, this is my pursuit.
