NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion and ESPN Radio 94.1 have partnered together for Throwback Thursday Monarch Rewinds to air great ODU games of the past. This week's rewind will be the 2019 Conference USA Men's Basketball Championship game. ODU held off Western Kentucky, 62-56, in the Ford Center at The Star to claim its first Conference USA basketball title and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The game will air on ESPN Radio 94.1 this Thursday, May 28 at 7:00 p.m. ET.
"I've been here at the station for 21 of the 27-year partnership with ODU Sports. We are excited to bring back some nostalgic games to re-air for ODU fans and alumni to reminisce," said Keith Barton, Vice President and General Manager of Max Media of Hampton Roads. "We can't wait to get back to live sports and events here in Hampton Roads, but for the short term, I hope everyone enjoys some ODU Sports Radio!"
ODU play by play announcer Ted Alexander and basketball color analyst Dave Twardzik are on the call.
The Monarchs (26-8) won the championship game in typical fashion. They knocked the more talented Hilltoppers back with their physical defense, and got just enough offense to win what until the final few minutes was a nip and tuck game.
It was a triumphant night for coach Jeff Jones, who claimed his 497th career victory in a season when he coached magnificently. Xavier Green finished with 16 points and was named the tournament Most Valuable Player, while Ahmad Caver joined him on the all-tournament team.
"It was fun going back into the archives and digging up some of the greatest moments in ODU Athletics," ODU Director of Broadcasting Ted Alexander said. "Not only to relive the games but also the feel of the game and the crowd all at the same time. We hope you enjoy it.
