PINEHURST, N.C. – On a wet and windy day at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, the Old Dominion men's golf team ended the first round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in fifth place with a team score of 306, or 22-over par.
Junior Gustav Fransson was able to battle the elements for the most part, as he finished the day in a tie for third place with a 1-over 72, just one stroke behind co-leaders Graham Hutchinson and Max Ferrari, both from Elon and shot an even 71 on the day. Fransson finished his round with four birdies and five bogeys.
The next-best Monarch finish was junior Rasmus Konradsson, who sits in a tie for 13th place in the field of 81 golfers, shooting 4-over par. Senior Doug Rios Ceballos came into the clubhouse with an opening-round score of 78, putting him 7-over par and in a tie for 27th place.
Filip Wetterqvist checks in with a 10-over 81, while Carter Morgan finished his opening round with a score of 15-over par.
Elon, with two of their five golfers sitting atop the leaderboard, ended round one in first place at 7-over par. Both Radford and Davidson finished 14-over par in a tie for second place. Fellow Virginian university Longwood settled into fourth place at 19-over par while ODU rounds out the top-five, at 22-over.
The Monarchs will be teeing off tomorrow at 8:36 a.m. for round two and they will be paired with Longwood and Marshall, the other Conference USA team competing in Pinehurst this weekend.
