NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion lacrosse team was defeated by Quinnipiac, 16-11 on Wednesday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
Senior Glory Johnson got the scoring started on a free-position shot, giving the Monarchs an early 1-0 lead. After Quinnipiac tied the game, Brooke Stein took a pass from Lilly Siskind and beat Bobcat goalkeeper Allie Kelsey to give ODU a 2-1 lead with 22:16 left on the first-half clock.
Quinnipiac jumped over ODU on the scoreboard after rattling off three straight goals in about a four-minute span to take a two-goal lead. The Monarchs responded with a 3-0 run of their own, as Lindsey Baer, Amber Stieve and Johnson put their team back on top, 5-4.
After two quick Quinnipiac goals, Johnson netted her third score of the game with just over six minutes left in the first half to knot the score at six apiece. The Bobcats ended the half with two goals, including a free-position goal with six seconds left on the clock, to take an 8-6 lead into the intermission.
Both Kelsey and ODU goalkeeper Brianna Blatter collected five saves in the first half hour of play, while Quinnipiac held an 18-13 shot advantage and a 10-8 ground ball advantage. Old Dominion successfully cleared the ball in all seven chances they had in the first half.
The Bobcats opened the second half with three straight goals to push their lead up to five, 11-6. Monarch tallies from Siskind and Johnson stopped the Bobcat run and cut the ODU deficit to just three goals.
Quinnipiac then went on a 3-1 scoring run to retake a five-goal lead with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation. The Monarchs couldn't claw back, and ended up failing, 16-11.
Johnson scored six goals for the Monarchs, three of which came on free-position shots, to bring her season total to 32. Today's goal-scoring effort officially puts her in the top-10 on the career goals list as a Monarch, as she now sits at 118 in her third season with ODU.
Off the bench, Baer scored two goals and registered an assist, while Siskind ended the contest with a goal and an assist. While minding the ODU goal, Blatter turned aside 10 shots in the effort.
The Bobcats were led by Maddie Deegan and Sophia Iaccino, who had four and three goals, respectively.
Overall, the Monarchs successfully cleared the ball from their defensive zone 13 out of 14 times and held a 16-12 draw control advantage. The Bobcats outshot ODU, 34-25, and also picked up 21 ground balls to the Monarchs' 12.
ODU will be back in action on Saturday, March 14, when it welcomes Campbell to the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The initial draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
